Workers can investigate problems along the line and make repairs or perform maintenance at these junction points.\n<br><br>\nManholes used to have flat bases in the not-too-distant past. As wastewater entered, the base filled up until it reached the height of the openings that carried it down the line. This meant that debris in the line could become entangled on the opening&#8217;s edge, slowly accumulating and causing obstructions to the flow.\n<br><br>\nThere was a solution: send someone down with a bucket of concrete to hand-carve channels that directed wastewater or sewage directly to the outgoing pipe. This reduced the opening&#8217;s bottom edge, resulting in fewer snags and improved flow of wastewater and sewage.\n<br><br>\nThese channels were an improvement over the monobase manholes, but they still had flaws. While the channels were &#8220;custom-built&#8221; for each line coming in or going out, alignment is nearly impossible. This meant that material could still become trapped where the channel and manhole met, albeit at a much lower rate.\n<br><br>\nThe manually created channels were also poured into position. This means that the mixture, weather conditions, and sufficient time to strengthen must all be ideal for the best results.
